The auxiliary facilities construction project for the national team of Beijing Sport University is one of the most important training bases for the national team in the 2008 Olympic Games, integrating training, scientific research and teaching as a whole. It is a modern integrated training base of track and field events, taekwondo, artistic gymnastics, trampolines, modern pentathlon and equestrian for Chinese national teams. The requirements for its future use regarding the size and the functions have been taken into the considerations of its design as the project is constructed not only for the 2008 Olympic Games but also for the sports training in China in the future.
Located on the campus of Beijing Sport University, the project is comprised of the following four parts.
1. Track and Field Training Centre, Integrated Training Stadium

The Track and Field Training Centre and the Integrated Training Stadium cover a floor area of 29,900m2. Great efforts have been made to create the “real-game conditions”. Meanwhile, the requirements for physical training, recovery treatment, and security and protection facilities are higher than those of ordinary venues. It is totally 291m long and 72m wide with a main steel structure. A 200m track in the track and field hall is the first wood-based plastic track in China. All the facilities inside the stadium conform to the standard of International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF). As a world’s advanced indoor track and field training venue, it not only can meet the requirements for training, but also is suitable for international indoor track and field events. The integrated training stadium is the China’s top training hall for artistic gymnastics and trampolines at present.
As background buildings, the track and field training centre and the integrated training stadium are sited on a straight line in the north of the campus, with a vast area of greenbelts for a rectangular wood to gap the difference between these two buildings and other architectures on the campus regarding size. Thus all the buildings are arranged in a harmonious way, which is conducive to improving the overall image of Beijing Sport University.
After the completion of these auxiliary facilities, the outer space of the old and the new campuses will be integrated with urban greenbelts, creating a harmonious urban environment and a space for cultural and leisure activities on the campus.
In response to the policy of “Holding the Olympic Games in a Cost-effective Way”, a kind of concrete, thermal-insulating decorative building blocks is adopted on the surface of the buildings, which makes good insulation, greatly saves the expenses in exterior decoration, and effectively shortens the construction period. With a close combination between the architectural form and functions, the buildings appear magnificent, simple and with a unified style, organically integrating with the campus of Beijing Sport University.
With the orderly-arranged strip-shaped glass curtain walls and daylighting strips on the roof , the building interior has sufficient daylight, good circulation of air, which not only saves energy but also satisfies the requirements for training.
2. Integrated Modern Pentathlon and Equestrian Training Hall
The integrated modern pentathlon and equestrian training hall is the training field for modern pentathlon teams of all nations in the 2008 Olympic Games, and is suitable for holding international sport events. The integrated hall is composed of the facilities for daily basic training and scientific research, the fencing training hall and the shooting training hall. Its total floor area is 8,670m2.
3. Apartment Building, Canteen and Auxiliary Training Hall for Athletes
The apartment building, canteen and auxiliary training hall for athletes cover a total floor area of 28,368m2, comprising three individual buildings: No.1 and No. 2 apartment buildings, and the auxiliary training hall.
The apartment building has 400 rooms in total, equipped with a large and a small canteens as well as a 500-seat Muslim canteen. The auxiliary training hall is suitable for tennis, basketball, volleyball, badminton, and other sports activities.
A red-brick finish is adopted to create a visual effect of the harmonious integration of “green trees and red walls” on the campus. A cluster of buildings forms an outward elevation facing the campus and an inward one facing the courtyards. The inside elevation and the outside elevation perfectly contrast each other and form a natural transition, giving a sense of unity.
4. The Research Centre on Physical Training & Recovery of Body Functions
With a floor area of 5275.66m2, the Research Centre on Physical Training & Recovery of Body Functions is composed of the newly-built research centre and the renovated science building.
Based on the overall layout design of the campus, the existing science building on the south side and the newly-built research centre on the north side are pieced together in the east and open to the west, constituting a perfectly enclosed courtyard, and achieving the integration between existing and new buildings in terms of architectural function and form. The woods on the construction site are fully preserved in the design for the rebuilding and renovation project. The succinct appearance embodies the characteristics of the sports building. The hypoxia bedroom is the focus in the construction. The testing data collected during the use of the hypoxia bedoorm fully meet the set targets. In terms of its scale, it ranks the 1st in Asia and the 3rd in the world.

All these projects above have been put into use and achieve the desired results.
